Finding pests around your home and in your yard can be more than just annoying. Many kinds of pests have the potential to spread disease, while most create some form of hassle or another in the form of painful bites, destruction of property and a lot of extra work, or the annihilation of entire gardens. For many years people have taken steps to combat the influence of pests in their homes and gardens. While the approaches people took often appeared to work, in reality some of the most popular methods of pest control were ineffective or worse.

Since the middle of the 20th century, the favourite method for most people on both the large and small scale when it came to controlling pests was spraying poisons to wipe them out. Research has proven that not only are chemical insecticides not very effective in the long run, they may also actually pose a serious danger to the health of humans and other animals not considered pests.

Today`s pest control companies and other skilful managers of pest problems approach the issue with integrated pest control. This method includes several steps for controlling the numbers of pests that can be found around a home and in the yard, including preventative measures.

The basic focus of integrated pest control is using the least toxic means possible to treat a pest problem. Let`s take a moment to clearly outline what least toxic means.

What toxic means

The term toxic refers to any substance which causes harm by affecting the nervous systems of living organisms. In the case of pest control substances, toxic usually means a poison designed to kill certain types of pests either through absorption, in the case of most insects, or through ingestion.

The problem with toxic measures of pest control is that they are not just harmful to the pests in question. They also have a negative effect on humans and other animals, including those that are beneficial to us.

The result of this is that many people are advocating for treatments which are not as poisonous when it comes to controlling pests.

Least Toxic

While all toxic material has the potential to cause harm, some kinds of bug sprays and treatments are less harmful than others; they are just as effective on the insects to be controlled, but have much less effect on humans.

The least toxic approach, therefore, means opting for the mildest form of pest control. This does not always mean that poisons are used; instead, the poison or chemical used in getting rid of the pest problem will have the least possible effect on the human population in the area.

In many cases, integrated pest control means that there is no need for toxic substances of any kind. Many types of solutions are possible beyond poisons, including traps, predators, and even diseases guaranteed to wipe out pest populations. Opting for these methods is almost always more effective than using poisons, and always carries less risk.
